DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., August 5, 2019 - AdventHealth Daytona Beach recognized registered nurses Kathleen Patenaude and Ashley Prescott with the DAISY award.
The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care provided by nurses.
An adult child of a patient nominated Patenaude, a nurse on the AdventHealth Daytona Beach medical progressive care unit.
“Our mother had been treated at AdventHealth numerous times. However, the last stay ended with hospice. Kathleen made mom's last days as peaceful as possible and filled with dignity,” the patient’s family member wrote. “As the nursing staff switched from active care to hospice care, she went above and beyond the care other nurses gave. She visited her room every hour to check on her and our family. She didn't just show up to dispense meds or check for signs of approaching death. She showed compassion and respect to all of us.”
“One thing Kathleen said that I will never forget was, ‘When your mom passes, I would give tears of joy that she has gone to heaven.’” The family member recounted. “Although we miss Mom, our beliefs do comfort us. We do know that Mom is no longer suffering from dementia. She is no longer in pain or having symptoms that were never cured. Kathleen hit the nail on the head when said to cry tears of joy when Mom passed, because she was going home to heaven for peace and everlasting life.”
Prescott is nurse on the cardiovascular step-down unit at AdventHealth Daytona Beach and was nominated by a patient.
“I had a hospital stay in excess of seven days. The confusion, anxiety and apprehension abound when you are a patient and left to feel out of the loop and primarily lost. Then you get a caring nurse who starts to break things down for you,” the patient wrote in nomination of Prescott. “She was vigilant of any issues I had. I watched her, every day, care for me with total control and authority. She was organized and kept everything flowing and in order, which made my life simpler and my discharge easier.”
In recognition of this honor, both Patenaude and Prescott received an award pin, a tote bag, and a hand-carved stone sculpture of the Healers Touch by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. Both of their units also received cinnamon rolls and a DAISY banner to display.
Created in 1999, more than 2,400 healthcare facilities in all 50 states, as well as 14 other countries, use the DAISY Award to honor nurses.
