DAVENPORT, Fla. — In collaboration with AdventHealth, the Auburndale City Commission recently proclaimed February as American Heart Month in Auburndale. The proclamation aligns with a nationwide effort to raise awareness about heart disease, prevention, early detection, the importance of health lifestyles, and support for those impacted by the disease.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death across the United States and Florida. According to research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, adults in rural areas are dying at a rate about 1.5 times higher than those living in urban areas. More specifically, we know the deaths in Polk County are higher than the state average at 148 out of 100,000 people, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Early detection through regular check-ups and timely follow-up care is proven to save lives, empowering individuals to take charge of their health and partner with their care providers.
“Heart disease and other heart-related illnesses affect so many lives, but early detection can make all the difference,” said Dr. Sathya Ramakrishnan, chief medical officer of AdventHealth Polk Market. “American Heart Month is a powerful reminder for everyone to prioritize their health. A simple screening can lead to early diagnosis, treatment options, and better outcomes. We’re honored to offer compassionate, comprehensive heart care right here in our community.”
As part of the proclamation, residents are encouraged to learn about the signs and risks of heart disease, talk with their health care providers about screening, and to support friends and family who are seeking follow-up care. Education and awareness also play a critical role in reducing the risk of heart disease through healthy habits such as proper nutrition, physical activity, routine medical care and stress management.
