AdventHealth Avista Performs First Ileocaval Reconstruction

IR Team

LOUISVILLE, Colo. AdventHealth Avista’s Interventional Radiology (IR) team recently performed its first ileocaval reconstruction, a complex, minimally invasive procedure designed to restore blood flow through the veins of the pelvis to the inferior vena cava (IVC).

The case presented significant challenges. The patient had been treated by multiple specialists for chronic deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and severe lower extremity swelling for several months. Because the clot was longstanding, navigating through the veins in both legs required advanced techniques and careful coordination.

To restore circulation, the IR team accessed veins in both ankles and groins. Using balloon angioplasty and specialized catheter technology, they created a channel through the chronic clot, allowing blood to drain from both legs. Stents were then placed in the inferior vena cava and both iliac veins to restore healthy blood flow back to the heart.

The successful procedure highlights the growing capabilities of AdventHealth Avista’s Interventional Radiology program and the collaborative expertise required to perform complex minimally invasive treatments.

In addition to ileocaval reconstruction, the team offers advanced therapies for severe deep vein thrombosis and is expanding services with innovative treatments such as minimally invasive ablation and embolization procedures for large benign thyroid nodules and goiters.

This milestone reflects AdventHealth Avista’s commitment to bringing advanced, specialized care closer to home for patients across the community.
