Windsor residents, Gary and Marita have spent the last 43 years blissfully married. Gary, a diabetic with high blood pressure, was told by his nephrologist in Longmont that his kidneys were failing, and a kidney transplant would be necessary. While there are only a few transplant programs in Colorado, for Gary and Marita – the choice for them was clear. The moment they walked into AdventHealth Porter, they were impressed by the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Marita knew in her heart that this was the place for them, a sentiment she believed was guided by God.
The kindness of the staff at the front desk and the awards displayed around the facility only reinforced their decision. Gary and Marita felt a sense of belonging and care that was unparalleled. The journey to the transplant was a long one, spanning seven years from the initial diagnosis. During this time, Gary's condition worsened, and he had to undergo dialysis for two years. Despite the challenges, the care they received from their nephrologist, Dr. Jadoon at Western Nephrology was exceptional. Dr. Jadoon assigned dialysis nurse, Chatty Torres to help Gary and Marita get set up with home dialysis. She was amazing and went above and beyond to support Marita and Gary whenever they experienced any challenges. The heart and dedication of the medical team at Western Nephrology made a significant difference in their lives.
Gary's transplant was nothing short of a miracle. The kidney came from a fellow church member, and although it wasn't a direct match, was given to another in need and his donation helped expedite finding Gary his perfect match. The kidney Gary received was from Chicago, and the timing was remarkable—it was exactly two years to the day after he started dialysis that he received the call. At the time of the transplant, Gary's kidney function was down to only 4%. The transplant saved his life.
Post-transplant, Gary's recovery has been remarkable. He is doing well, with his kidney functioning properly. Marita was amazed at how different Gary looked immediately after the transplant—he truly looked like himself again. Gary, now 72 and soon to be 73, is thriving. He enjoys walking more, running errands, spending more time with loved ones and enjoying his reclaimed quality of life.
Marita and Gary relied on God as their faith was a constant source of strength throughout this journey. The couple’s connection has only grown stronger through this experience and are savoring the blessing of having more time together in good health.
Gary and Marita's story is a testament to the power of faith, love, and exceptional medical care. Their journey, filled with challenges and triumphs, serves as an inspiration to others facing similar battles.
March is National Kidney Month. According to the National Kidney Foundation, every eight minutes, another person is added to the transplant waiting list which currently includes more than 100,000 names.
