“I shouldn’t be here. But I am, because of them.”
Gary Giovia said those words slowly, sounding like someone still processing what many would consider a miracle. A year ago, while riding a bus to his hotel with his wife Laura, the then 58-year-old collapsed without warning. His heart had stopped. He had suffered what’s known as a widowmaker, a massive heart attack caused by complete blockage.
Laura and Gary say what they experienced at AdventHealth Celebration went far beyond expert clinical care. From the nurse who brought water, tissues and comfort, to the chaplain who sat with Laura when she thought she couldn’t go on, every interaction was deeply personal.
“I was falling apart,” Laura said. “And they cared about me too. They helped me be strong enough to sit by Gary’s side. The care was great, and we've heard miraculous stories, but the love and care that AdventHealth provided us compares to nothing else.”
When Gary arrived at AdventHealth Celebration, he was in critical condition. His kidneys and liver had stopped functioning, and oxygen to his brain had been severely limited. He was eventually placed into a medically induced coma.
“He had a hundred percent blockage,” Laura said. “When we lost all hope, AdventHealth was able to not only provide the expert care he needed for him to make a full recovery, but also to provide us the hope that we really lost.”
He had to be revived twice. Once, when his heart stopped for eight minutes, and second time when it stopped for another six.
Doctors prepared the family for the worst. But instead, something remarkable happened. Things slowly started to change. Gary’s numbers were getting better. The room felt different. Even in the middle of all the wires and machines, there was a quiet sense the tide was turning.
Small moments of progress became signs of something bigger: hope. One nurse confidently declared, “We’re getting that boy up today.” By that afternoon, Gary was off the ventilator and sitting up.
“It was unreal,” Laura said. “I still can’t believe it happened.”
Gary spent eight days in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit, surrounded by a care team that refused to give up. He doesn’t remember the heart attack or the days that followed. But his wife and three sons say they’ll never forget how it felt to be surrounded by compassion and love. One year later, they all returned to Celebration to say thank you to his care team in person.
Laura added, “They didn’t just save a man. They saved a father, a husband and a son. They saved a brother, a best friend.”
For Dr. Astrid Pilgrim, director of the CVICU at AdventHealth Celebration, seeing Gary return was something rare and powerful she and her team don’t often get to witness.
“Thank you. You saved my life. You saved me for my family,” he said. “I can hardly put it into words. AdventHealth did everything to keep me here and give me a future with my whole family. And I can't thank them enough.”
“When someone comes back that we've seen, it's an instant morale booster. You feel so good about everything,” she said. “It’s just a great feeling to know that what we're doing has real impact on people’s lives. To see them later is something that in the ICU we’re not afforded that opportunity often. So I feel really blessed by him and his family visiting.”
The team who surrounded Gary with care and compassion is part of a broader network known for clinical excellence. AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division hospitals, including AdventHealth Celebration, were recently named among the Top 20 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The same recognition ranked its cardiology, heart and vascular surgery program among the best in the country, and the best in Florida. For the Giovias, though, it wasn’t just about credentials. It was the people. Their skill, their presence and their persistence that made all the difference.
As Gary and Laura walked the hospital halls, they were overwhelmed with emotion. They remembered the tears, the prayers, the unwavering support. And they celebrated what now felt like a gift, more time together.
“There’s nothing like AdventHealth,” Laura said. “What they gave us can’t be measured. They saved my husband. They saved our family.”
And Gary, once again, kept it simple.
“I’m here. That’s everything.”
