Mayor Steve Collins’ story
Manchester Mayor Steve Collins felt healthy. He had no symptoms and no reason to believe anything was wrong. Like many people, he knew he should have scheduled a colonoscopy years earlier, but he kept putting it off.
“I probably should have gotten one ten or twelve years before I did,” he says.
When Mayor Collins finally decided to move forward with the screening, the results were unexpected.
“When they told me I had a mass in my colon, my first reaction was, ‘Did I hear that right?’” he recalls. “It’s a rude awakening, especially when you feel great and aren’t having any symptoms.”
The discovery was life-changing. While the mass ultimately proved not to be cancerous, the experience highlighted how important preventive screenings can be.
“That decision could have changed my life in a heartbeat,” Mayor Collins says.
Throughout his experience, Mayor Collins found comfort in the care he received at AdventHealth Manchester.
“I couldn’t have asked for better care,” he says. “They were caring and compassionate. I felt like I was being treated by family and friends, and that made all the difference.”
Having advanced, compassionate care close to home meant more than convenience. It meant trust.
“It’s great to have a facility like this in your hometown,” he says.
Today, Mayor Collins shares his story to encourage others not to delay preventive care.
“Whether it’s a colonoscopy, a mammogram, or a PSA test, don’t put it off,” he says. “Preventive checkups can truly change your life.”
