A team of AdventHealth urologists was recognized at ERUS26, the 2026 meeting of the EAU Robotic Urology Section and one of the leading robotic urology meetings in the world, for its work helping establish pathways for transcontinental telesurgery to be performed safely, reproducibly, and responsibly.
The team’s project, Transcontinental telesurgery in practice: First FDA IDE-approved robotic procedure between the USA and Angola, received one of the awards for Best Posters at ERUS26.
The study describes the team’s involvement in performing 10 procedures (telesurgery prostatectomies) to treat patients with prostate cancer in Angola. The main surgeon, Dr. Vipul Patel, founder and medical director of the Global Robotics Institute at AdventHealth Celebration, was in Orlando while the second surgeon, Dr. Marcio Covas Moschovas, research director of the AdventHealth Urology residency, was in Angola with the patient. The procedure spanned nearly 7,000 miles, making it the first telesurgery between America and Africa, one of longest distance telesurgery ever completed, and setting a new global benchmark in surgical innovation.
Dr. Moschovas, one of the study’s principal Investigators and project first author, represented AdventHealth at ERUS26 as a faculty member and moderator of the Technology Forum, and accepted the award.
“Over the past two years, many collaborators across different countries, institutions, specialties, and areas of expertise have contributed to making this project possible,” said Dr. Moschovas. “From clinical care and research to technology, connectivity, regulatory work, training, and patient safety, this achievement was truly built together. We believe telesurgery has the potential to overcome geographic barriers and extend access to specialized surgical expertise to underserved and remote areas around the world.”
