Varicose Vein Treatments

Unsightly varicose veins can be treated via multiple methods, not all of which require surgery. For example, your physician may advise you to wear compression stockings, exercise and lose weight as a first-line measure for alleviating your varicose veins. When such non-invasive methods fail to produce the desired results, more advanced treatments can include sclerotherapy, where the veins are injected with a medication that causes them to close. Laser surgery is another method, where light energy is applied and no incision is needed. In vein stripping, small veins can be tied off prior to joining them with larger ones and then surgically removed, while in ambulatory phlebectomy, small varicose veins are removed through pin-prick punctures. For certain patients, endoscopic vein surgery can be performed by surgeons with advanced training in this type of procedure.
