Uterine Balloon Therapy System
The uterine balloon therapy system is an incisionless, endometrial ablation procedure that can provide an effective and permanent solution for women who experience abnormally heavy periods. With the patient under general or local anesthesia, the physician passes a small balloon into the uterus via the vagina. This balloon is then filled with fluid until it matches the parameters of the organ, and then the fluid is heated so as to destroy the endometrial lining upon contact with the balloon. This ablation only takes about eight minutes, after which the fluid is drained and the balloon removed. The treatment can be an effective alternative for women who wish to avoid the side effects of hormone therapy (weight gain, breast tenderness, mood swings) while eliminating overly heavy periods.
