Urethral Sling

A urethral sling is one of several potential treatments for women with a pelvic floor disorder that causes stress urinary incontinence (an involuntary loss of urine when you sneeze, laugh or exercise). The procedure involves placement of a flexible surgical mesh that provides support to the urethra and keeps it from slipping out of its natural position. This can be done on an outpatient basis and with the patient under local, regional or general anesthesia, depending on the specific method used. Over time, the mesh will be enveloped by and within the patient’s body tissues to create an even stronger support mechanism.
