Turf Toe
Turf toe is a term used to describe a ligament sprain around the big toe. It is often seen in athletes such as football players, soccer players, dancers and gymnasts, but it can develop in anyone. Turf toe occurs when the toe is forcibly hyperextended, causing damage to the metatarsal and surrounding soft tissue. It may occur as only a small tissue tear or can present as a dislocated metatarsal, and treatment will depend on its severity. Rest, ice, compression and elevation are the first steps in healing a toe injury. Anti-inflammatory medications may also be used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. If the metatarsal is dislocated or the tear is very severe, injections, stenting and surgery may be required to repair the area and prevent further damage from occurring.
