Traumatic Brain Injury Evaluation and Treatment
Patients who have experienced a significant blow to the head during a fall, car accident, sporting event or other traumatic incident require immediate evaluation and treatment by a trained medical professional. Even a mild concussion can change the way the brain functions, though usually temporarily, and prompt symptoms ranging from a headache to nausea, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia, memory loss, light sensitivity and blurred vision. These symptoms may go away without treatment, but need to be monitored closely to ensure they don’t worsen over time, which would indicate a more serious problem. Physicians who provide TBI evaluations are able to determine when it is safe for the patient to return to sports and other activities based on a thorough neurological exam, and can prescribe certain medications that may help avoid further injury to the brain in the immediate aftermath of an accident.
