Sore Throat

A sore throat is characterized by pain, irritation, scratchiness or tingling in the throat. This condition can make swallowing difficult, or can worsen when swallowing. Most people will experience a sore throat multiple times prior to reaching adulthood. It is typically a symptom of another illness and may be caused by viral infections like the cold, flu and mononucleosis or by bacterial infections including streptococcus (or Strep throat). Other conditions such as allergies, dry air, heartburn and even muscle strain from yelling, talking loudly or singing may also cause a sore throat. Some conditions that cause a sore throat may get better without treatment, but people who experience severe throat soreness should be treated by a doctor if their condition is accompanied by difficulty breathing, swallowing problems, joint pain, earache, fever, rash, unusual drooling (in children), bloody saliva, or a lump in the neck. Likewise, frequently recurring sore throats and those lasting longer than a week should be evaluated by your physician.
