Shoulder Replacement

Shoulder replacement surgery involves removing damaged portions of the shoulder joint and replacing them with artificial components. Patients who have sustained severe trauma to a shoulder or who suffer from chronic pain associated with degenerative joint diseases such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can often obtain significant and lasting relief through shoulder replacement surgery. Here, the head of the upper arm bone and sometimes the scapula (shoulder bone) are replaced with prosthetics or topped with a prosthetic surface. Most shoulder replacement surgeries are performed with the patient under general anesthesia and require a short hospital stay. Starting as early as the day of your surgery or possibly one day after, you will receive physical therapy to start the process of rehabilitating your shoulder and restoring the joint’s natural flexibility.
