Rigid Cystoscopy

A rigid cystoscopy is so-named because of the telescopic instrument (called a cystoscope) that is used to perform it. This is a procedure used to diagnose and treat problems within the bladder and urinary tubes, and is commonly ordered when a patient has experienced hematuria (blood in their urine), symptoms of an irritable bladder or chronic bladder infections. The entire procedure can usually be performed in 30 minutes, with the patient under either a general or spinal anesthetic. The cystoscope is inserted through the urethra and allows your physician to visualize the bladder lining, take a tissue sample for biopsy, and/or remove small polyps or stones. You should be able to return home on the same day and go back to work one day later.
