Reflux Esophagitis

Reflux esophagitis is a condition that occurs when the valve between the stomach and esophagus fails to close all the way and allows stomach acid to wash backward into the esophagus. When this is a chronic/repetitive problem, the patient may be diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Reflux esophagitis is more likely to occur in patients who consume large quantities of fatty foods, alcohol or caffeine. It is also more likely to occur in someone who goes to bed right after eating. Left untreated, this condition can lead to an esophageal stricture or possibly Barrett’s esophagus, a potentially pre-cancerous condition.
