Rashes

Rashes are characterized by inflammation, itching, irritation, redness, pain and raised areas on the skin that often occur as a result of an allergic reaction. When the allergic reaction is due to coming in contact with a substance such as pollen, poison ivy, dust or chemicals within latex, the rash is called contact dermatitis. When the reaction occurs as a scaly, itchy patch of skin around the eyes, mouth, nose, ears or scalp, it is called seborrheic dermatitis. Hives - which appear as a patch of red bumps on the skin - are called urticaria. Some rashes occur due to viruses such as chickenpox, rubella, hand-foot-mouth disease and fifth disease, particularly in children. It’s important to seek medical evaluation for a rash that is caused by a tick bite or is accompanied by fever, sore throat or streaks of redness on the skin. Emergency medical assistance should be sought for rashes that occur along with facial swelling, throat tightness or shortness of breath.
