Proctoscopy

Proctoscopy refers to the close examination of the interior of the rectum and anus using a flexible, tube-like instrument called a proctoscope that is fitted with a tiny camera and light. It is often done prior to a patient undergoing rectal surgery and/or to evaluate hemorrhoids, remove polyps, look for a cause of rectal bleeding or inflammation, and help diagnose a rectal disorder. A proctoscopy allows your doctor to visualize lesions and other abnormal growths and procure a tissue sample for biopsy. Patients who have experienced abdominal pain, abnormal changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool or other related symptoms may undergo proctoscopy to obtain a diagnosis or determine the need for additional testing in the form of a sigmoidoscopy.
