Polypectomy
Polyps are potentially pre-cancerous masses that can form throughout the body, including not only the colon but also the nasal cavities, uterus, bladder and stomach. Though they are typically without symptoms, once discovered, polyps are usually removed via a polypectomy procedure as a preventive measure. In most cases, polyp removal, also known as a polypectomy, is performed via an endoscopic procedure that does not require exterior surgical incisions. For example, during a colonoscopy procedure, both small and large polyps can typically be excised as part of the procedure using special instruments that are attached to the scope. Polyps elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract may be removed via esophagogastroduodenoscopy or open surgery when necessary.
