Pilonidal Disease
The chronic irritation and infection of the natal cleft (or buttock crease) that runs just below the sacrum to the perineum is known as pilonidal disease. Patients who suffer from pilonidal disease often have one or more inflamed cysts that get infected and cause pain in the affected area of the buttocks. Symptoms of pilonidal disease may vary from a small bump or dimple to a large painful cyst. The area may drain fluid that is both bloody and clear. If infection occurs, the affected area may become sore and the drainage may have a foul odor. The customary treatment of pilonidal disease depends on the severity of the condition and may include antibiotics or surgery to drain or remove a painful cyst. In cases where patients encounter few if any symptoms, treatment may not be needed.
