Orthotics
Orthotics are specially designed devices that go into your shoe to correct foot function, reduce foot pain and/or protect your foot from injury. While over-the-counter orthotics are readily available in most pharmacies, orthotics that are prescribed by your specialist may be more effective in addressing conditions such as an abnormal walking pattern because they are customized to address your unique foot structure. Some forms of orthotics that are commonly used today include arch supports, insoles, heel liners and foot cushions. Conditions for which podiatrists may prescribe an orthotic device include diabetic foot ulcers; foot and heel pain; plantar fasciitis, bursitis and ankle pain.
