Neurogenic Bladder

Neurogenic bladder is a condition in which a child lacks bladder control because of brain, spinal cord or nerve problems. When in the muscles and nerves in the bladder don’t work together, it becomes very difficult to have normal bladder function. Symptoms may include frequent urination of small amounts, an inability to completely empty the bladder, and loss of bladder control (incontinence). They may also include an inability to know when the bladder is full. Most of the time, a neurogenic bladder is seen in children born with spina bifida, a serious condition in which the tube that holds the spinal cord fails to develop or close properly.
