Laryngoscopy

A laryngoscopy is a procedure for examining the back of the throat, including the larynx and vocal cords. It may be performed using a laryngoscope, which is a cylindrical device that allows for greater visualization of the throat as well as collection of a tissue sample for biopsy. When this is the case, the procedure is done in the hospital with the patient under general anesthesia to avoid any discomfort. However, an indirect laryngoscopy can be performed right in your doctor’s office and without general anesthesia. A numbing spray is simply applied to the back of the throat and the physician employs a mirrored instrument to visualize the larynx. Endoscopy can help diagnose the reason for a patient’s swallowing difficulties, upper respiratory issues, chronic coughing or coughing up blood, breathing issues, voice problems or consistent throat pain.
