Insulin Resistance
Patients with insulin resistance have a pancreas that produces insulin but lack the ability to effectively process that insulin in order to regulate their blood sugar. As a result, they develop Type 2 diabetes. Causes and contributors to this condition include poor weight management, a sedentary lifestyle, certain medications, old age, sleep apnea and smoking. It is possible to help the body to process insulin more effectively through weight loss, dietary restrictions and physical activity. These therapies as well as certain medications such as Metformin can help a person keep a “pre-diabetes” condition from progressing to full-blown Type II diabetes.
