Hip Disorders
Hip disorders can occur in both adults and children as a result of trauma, a developmental abnormality, an infection or a chronic underlying medical condition such as osteoarthritis. Typical symptoms of a hip disorder can include hip and leg pain along with an abnormal gait, muscle stiffness and inflexibility of the hip joint. Hip disorders that are diagnosed in children include developmental dysplasia, Perthes disease and irritable hip syndrome. While anti-inflammatory and pain medications are often part of a patient’s treatment plan for a hip disorder, surgery may be required to put the joint back in place, repair tendons and ligaments and sometimes to replace the entire hip joint with a total hip prosthesis.
