Hiatal Hernia
A hiatal hernia develops when part of the stomach pushes upward through the diaphragm. While this condition may be without symptoms and not require treatment, it can be a key factor for acid reflux/heartburn or cause problems with swallowing and belching. This type of hernia may develop due to trauma to the affected area, persistent pressure on the surrounding muscles, a congenital defect or the strain of lifting heavy objects. High risk factors for hiatal hernia include being obese and being over the age of 50. While hiatal hernia repair surgery can be provided, in most cases, medications to address the symptoms of a hiatal hernia are all that is required.
