Hematuria (Blood in Urine)

Common causes of blood in the urine include urinary tract infections, bladder stones, certain medications, menstruation and kidney disease. Other less common possibilities include cancer, blood clots or clotting disorders and sickle cell disease. Sometimes the only way that blood can be detected within urine is by microscopic examination – and in these cases, the patient rarely has accompanying symptoms. However, some patients with visible blood in their urine due to blood clots may experience pain. When hematuria is the result of a urinary tract infection, that infection is easily treated with antibiotics. When a UTI is not the cause, further diagnostic tests may be performed and treatment rendered accordingly.
