Foot Surgery

Foot surgery is typically performed by a specially trained podiatrist or orthopaedic surgeon, and depending on the procedure it may be conducted in the hospital or physician’s office. Many foot surgeries can be conducted on an outpatient basis, with the patient being able to return home on the same day as the operation. Physicians who perform foot surgery may specialize in Achilles repair to address a ruptured or torn Achilles tendon; surgery to address chronic deformities caused by arthritis conditions and non-healing ulcers; bunion surgery; removal of ganglion cysts; flatfoot correction surgery; heel surgery to mitigate plantar fasciitis and/or bone spurs; neuroma removal; and hammertoe surgery. A minimally invasive approach to foot surgery and diagnostic procedures for the foot is called arthroscopy, which is performed using small incisions and a special tool with a tiny camera on it called an arthroscope. These types of procedures can result in a lower risk of infection, swelling, and trauma to nearby tissues, and are therefore the preferred method of approach when appropriate for a particular patient and condition.
