Foot Fracture
The feet contain the largest number of bones in your body, and many of these bones are very easy to fracture or break. There are two kinds of foot fractures: stress fractures and general bone fractures. Stress fractures appear as tiny cracks in the bone’s surface and usually develop due to improper exercise or training techniques. General bone fractures usually result from trauma, such as dropping a heavy object on your foot, stepping on something, or twisting the foot or ankle too far. Symptoms of a fracture include swelling, pain and sometimes bruising. Treatment may require immobilizing the broken bone to allow it to heal, and possibly over-the-counter or prescription medicine to help with pain and swelling. If the break is more severe, surgery may be required to repair the bone and surrounding areas.
