Flexible Cystoscopy
A flexible cystoscopy is performed to closely examine the bladder interior using a flexible, fiber optic scope that projects images on a screen for your doctor to see. This flexible scope is no larger than a catheter and there is very little discomfort during the procedure. Your doctor may recommend a flexible cystoscopy if you have blood in your urine, a suspected bladder tumor, an enlarged prostate, an obstruction, chronic infections, bladder stones, urinary leakage or difficulty urinating. An anesthetic jelly is applied to the urethra to numb the area for the procedure. The scope is inserted into the urethra and travels into the bladder, allowing your doctor to have a clear view of the entire bladder. After viewing the inside of the bladder, your doctor will be able to create a plan of care that may include further testing and treatments, or simple lifestyle changes to incorporate into your daily routine.
