Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction surgery, also called oncoplasty, may be done immediately following breast cancer surgery such as a mastectomy or lumpectomy, or it may be performed at a later time depending on the patient’s condition, need for additional treatment and other considerations. Two of the most common forms of breast reconstruction involve saline breast implants and muscle flap reconstruction that uses the patient’s own tissue. This surgery is often done in two stages, the first of which involves placement of a temporary expander to stretch the skin over a period of months prior to placing an implant. Nearly every breast cancer patient can receive some form of oncoplasty surgery to restore the cosmetic appearance of their breast, and your breast surgeon will thoroughly discuss your options in this regard.
