Blood in Urine (Hematuria)

Kidney disease, kidney stones, urinary tract and kidney infections can all cause blood to appear in the urine that is either easily seen by the naked eye or microscopically detected. Most people with microscopic hematuria do not require medical treatment unless they have developed a kidney stone. Other common causes of blood in the urine include genetic disease, high calcium levels, excessive exercise, an irritated urethra, trauma or injury, abnormal structures in the urinary tract and glomerulonephritis. Treatment will depend on the condition that is causing blood to appear in the urine, and may include medication, lifestyle adjustments and surgery.
