Barium Swallow Test
A barium swallow test is used to help diagnose acid reflux and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) as well as esophageal strictures in both adults and children. This test involves drinking a liquid containing barium, a chalky powder that is mixed with water to help easily coat your digestive tract, allowing your doctor to view your pharynx and esophagus through X-rays to look for any abnormalities. A barium swallow may also be partnered with other tests to help reach a diagnosis. This diagnostic test is painless and safe, and non-invasive.
