Anal Surgery

Anal surgery may be performed for a wide variety of reasons and in multiple forms. For example, for patients who have been diagnosed with anal cancer, a local resection may be performed to remove the tumor and allow the sphincter to remain intact, while an abdominoperineal resection (APR) involves the surgeon removing both the anus and rectum in a more complicated procedure. That said, surgery is not usually the first treatment option for patients with anal cancer. Anal surgery may also be performed to address hemorrhoids, an anal abscess (also called a fistula) or an anal fissure.
