Adrenal Surgery

The adrenal gland is located on top of each kidney and is divided into two sections: the adrenal medulla and the adrenal cortex. Each has a different function, including regulating your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, blood glucose and other essential hormonal functions. Although there are two parts to the adrenal gland, the vast majority of malignancies of the adrenal gland occur in the cortex. Carcinomas of the adrenal gland are considered either functional or nonfunctional; that is, they either produce steroids (which may lead to clinical symptoms) or they don't. This disease is very rare, affecting only about 2 out of every 1 million people. If a non-cancerous tumor or adrenal cancer is discovered, you may need adrenal surgery to remove the tumor and adrenal gland. When one adrenal gland is removed, the other takes over all of the functions without the need for additional medications.
