Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendinitis is an injury to the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body. While this tendon can withstand over 1,000 pounds of force, it is the most frequently injured tendon and injuries are generally due to overuse. Athletes of all calibers may incur this common overuse injury. Mild pain in the back of the leg, specifically the area below the calf and above the heel, is the characteristic symptom of Achilles tendinitis. Other symptoms may include recurring pain in the same area, lower calf tenderness, stiffness - especially upon waking up - and mild swelling. Rest and over-the-counter medications can relieve Achilles tendinitis symptoms, but if you are unable to flex and point your toes, are unable to walk, or the pain is persistent or severe, you should consult a physician.
