Achilles Tear
An Achilles tear is a full or partial separation of the large tendon that connects the heel to the calf. Since the Achilles is essential for such activities as walking and jumping, tearing (or “rupturing”) this fibrous tissue can be not only severely painful but quite debilitating. Such injuries typically occur while playing sports such as basketball and tennis. Depending on the severity of the tear and needs of the patient, treatment for an Achilles tear may include nonsurgical methods such as physical therapy along with bracing, casting or orthotic devices - or, in cases of patients who regularly participate in significant athletic activity, surgery to reconnect the torn ends of the tendon to each other.
