- What Is HPB Surgery?
-
Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery is a highly specialized type of operative care focused on the liver, pancreas and bile ducts. These organs are essential for digestion and overall health. HPB surgery treats both noncancerous (benign) and cancerous (malignant) conditions affecting these areas.
- What You Can Expect
-
If you need HPB surgery, you’ll be in the hands of experts with advanced training who understand the complexity of these organs. Because they’re closely connected and surrounded by many blood vessels, these procedures require exceptional skill and precision.
HPB surgeries include removing part of the liver or pancreas, as well as bile duct and complex gallbladder removal. These procedures can be done through traditional open surgery or, more often today, using minimally invasive techniques, like laparoscopic or robotic surgery, which can potentially offer faster recovery.
Your care will involve a team of specialists — surgeons, cancer doctors, radiologists and others — working together to help you heal. Our team-based approach ensures the best possible outcomes and supports your quality of life throughout treatment.
- Why Choose AdventHealth for HPB Surgery
-
Experience
Our surgical team brings over 60 years of combined experience, with more than half of that rooted in the Denver Metro area. We provide second opinions for all HPB conditions and often perform surgeries for patients whom other centers have declined.
Expertise
All of our surgeons are board-certified and have advanced fellowship training in HPB surgery and abdominal organ transplant surgery. Our transplant expertise means we can offer liver transplantation, when necessary, as a surgical treatment for liver and bile duct cancers.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
You’ll have a team of experts, including surgeons, cancer doctors, radiologists and more, working together to guide your care every step of the way. From standard therapies to clinical trials, this team will collaborate and recommend the most appropriate care plan for you.
Personalized Care You Can Trust
Our program is recognized for excellent surgical results and a strong focus on patient safety and quality of life. We tailor every care plan to your unique needs, ensuring you feel informed and supported at every step of your treatment journey.
You’ll have a dedicated care team, including nurses, medical assistants and advanced practice providers, focused exclusively on supporting HPB surgery patients. Our team works closely with your referring physician to make sure your care is smooth and efficient, and we can schedule your appointment within just a few days of receiving a referral.
Innovation, Research and Access
We use the latest minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, to reduce recovery time and improve outcomes. We may also use ablative therapies — treatments that destroy unhealthy tissue — either along with surgery or as an alternative. You may have access to clinical trials that could offer additional treatment options.
We offer a convenient central location and virtual telemedicine appointments so you can connect with a provider from the comfort of your home.
- Collaborating Through Our HPB Conference
-
Every week, our multidisciplinary team of experts meets to review cases and develop the best plan of care for patients with both benign and malignant conditions of the liver, bile duct and pancreas cancer, reviewing care plans for more than 800 patients each year. This team includes surgeons, liver specialists, gastroenterologists, cancer doctors, radiation specialists and pathologists — all working together for you. Your doctor can join these meetings virtually to stay involved in your care.
After each review, we communicate our recommendations directly with your referring provider.
