Special-Care Nursery for Our Tiniest Patients

Our AdventHealth Port Charlotte special-care nursery, located adjacent to The Baby Place®, provides care for newborns born at 35-weeks’ gestation or later who are stable, yet in need of some level of extra care after birth.

Additionally, the nursery can temporarily care for newborns who need a higher, more specialized level of care until they can be transferred to the appropriate facility.

Skin-to-Skin With Babies
Our nurses and OB/GYNs at The Baby Place encourage family members to visit our special care nursery and participate in caring for their baby. During your visits, a neonatal nurse will help you learn how to care for your baby, so you are comfortable caring for your newborn at home.

We understand the importance of soothing skin-to-skin contact between babies and their parents. Skin-to-skin contact promotes healing, comfort and bonding. Sometimes called "kangaroo care," skin-to-skin contact is important for all babies.

Benefits of skin-to-skin with babies can include the following:

  • Allows babies to feel safe when they hear their moms' familiar heartbeats
  • Encourages breastfeeding
  • Stabilizes body temperature, blood sugar and breathing

Dedicated to Sleep Safety for Every Baby

Rest assured that your child will be safe and sound as they sleep at our hospital. We’re committed to best practices while your baby is with us, and we teach every new parent the ABCs of infant sleep safety so they can sleep soundly at home:

A is for alone time: It’s safest for babies to sleep alone
B is for back: Babies should always sleep on their backs
C is for cribs: Cribs and bassinets are safest for sleep

Get more details on each of these letters and how they form the building blocks for safe sleep.

Caring for Moms and Babies in Body, Mind and Spirit

After being hospitalized with a kidney infection in her third trimester, Danielle decided to change her birth plan to deliver with us.

Danielle says her OB/GYN and the nursing staff were attentive, kind and made for an overall great experience. She encourages moms-to-be to “look for a physician that you feel understands, supports and respects your birthing plan. If you’re not sure what birthing plan is right for you, find a physician that you feel comfortable voicing your thoughts and concerns with, one that listens to you.”

When her big day came, Sarah was ready. “This is my first child, so having a natural labor and birth was important to me so that I could be an active participant the entire time. [My doctor] was supportive from our first meeting through the delivery of my son at [AdventHealth] Baby Place. He coached me every step of the way.”

Returning to the same hospital where she and her husband were born three decades earlier, Charleen said the nurses and staff made her and her husband feel at ease.

“They coached us through labor, were at our side the entire delivery, and after she was born, made sure everything was going well and that we were adjusting comfortably to the baby and her needs.”
