- Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke
-
There are a few types of strokes, including:
- A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures.
- An ischemic stroke is the most common type and happens when a clot blocks a vessel supplying blood to the brain.
- A transient ischemic stroke (TIA), also called a “mini-stroke,” is a short episode of stroke symptoms that does not cause permanent damage but can lead to serious future strokes.
The most common signs of a stroke can be remembered with the acronym BE FAST:
- Balance: sudden loss of balance or difficulty walking
- Eyes: sudden changes in vision
- Face: drooping or numb face
- Arm: sudden weakness or numbness in an arm or leg
- Speech: difficulty speaking or slurred speech
- Time: call 911 if you see symptoms
Additional warning signs may include sudden confusion or a severe headache.
If you notice any signs of a stroke in yourself or a loved one, call 911 right away to get emergency medical care. When you come to us, our Ocala hospital team will be here, ready to help with efficient expertise.
