A new approach to cancer research at AdventHealth is helping bring care, support and hope directly into patients’ homes.
Justin Brown, PhD, Associate Investigator at AdventHealth, has dedicated his career to studying how exercise can improve outcomes for cancer patients after losing his father to colon cancer as a teenager. His work is part of a growing field of research showing that physical activity may help reduce cancer recurrence, improve treatment tolerance and enhance long-term survival.
To make participation easier for patients, AdventHealth researchers are removing many of the barriers commonly associated with clinical trials. Instead of requiring patients to travel to a cancer center several times each week, participants receive exercise equipment such as treadmills or stationary bikes delivered directly to their homes, along with wearable monitoring devices and virtual guidance from certified cancer exercise specialists.
This home-based model allows researchers to closely monitor exercise programs while giving patients the flexibility to participate on their own schedule and in the comfort of their homes. The approach is currently being used in several active clinical trials focused on colon, colorectal, gastrointestinal and lung cancers, including studies available remotely to patients across Florida.
Beyond the research itself, the initiative is designed to improve quality of life and empower patients throughout their cancer journey. By reducing transportation challenges, increasing accessibility and supporting long-term healthy habits, AdventHealth is helping reshape how cancer research and survivorship care are delivered.
Researchers believe this patient-centered model could expand access to clinical trials, improve health equity and create more meaningful, real-world outcomes for cancer patients statewide and beyond.
