How Gamma Knife Treats Brain Tumors

An advanced technology inspires a new surge of hope. Thanks to Gamma Knife technology, many tumors and lesions once considered inoperable are now highly treatable, often in less than one hour. More than half a million successful surgeries have been performed using this technology around the world, and our Orlando institute location is honored to be the only facility in Central Florida offering this lifesaving treatment.

The gold standard in radiosurgery, Gamma Knife, targets multiple brain lesions during a single session with precise beams of radiation that leave healthy tissue surrounding the treated area untouched. Without incisions and anesthesia, most patients can go home the same day.

A few of the many benefits of Gamma Knife include:

• Eliminates risk of hemorrhage or infection
• Minimal discomfort
• No anesthesia required
• No incision
• Pinpoint accuracy

GammaTile is a biodegradable implant that delivers targeted radiotherapy specifically to the region where your brain tumor was located prior to surgery. The number of tiles used is customized to the size and location of your surgery. After GammaTiles are placed, they immediately begin delivering therapeutic radiation to the target area. A high radiation dose is delivered slowly and safely over several months, and afterward, the GammaTile becomes non-radioactive (inert). Over time, your body naturally absorbs the biodegradable GammaTile, and only inert “seeds” remain.

GammaTile is FDA-approved to treat patients with brain tumors. It is a “one and done” therapy that eliminates the need for conventional daily radiotherapy, so you can focus on what matters most: healing.

How It Works: NeuroPace RNS

Similar to the way a pacemaker monitors and responds to heart rhythms, the NeuroPace RNS system is the first and only medical device that can monitor and respond to your brain activity to reduce seizures.

Our Orlando institute location is the only hospital in Central Florida with the NeuroPace RNS system. We offer this responsive neurostimulation technology to adults with intractable epilepsy.

Surgically implanted, though reversible, NeuroPace RNS offers a leading-edge solution that works with your body and brain to provide relief from seizures, greatly reducing epilepsy-related anxiety and positively affecting your overall quality of life.

We know when it comes to you or someone you love, there’s no such thing as “minimal” surgery. However, we’re doing everything in our power to create and adopt the least invasive technologies possible to reduce your surgical risks and recovery time.

When you choose the AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute, you can feel confident knowing our physicians are experts in a variety of minimally invasive procedures, including some requiring no incision at all.

A few of the many innovative MIBS treatments and technologies include:

• Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™: The gold standard in radiosurgery can treat multiple brain lesions with advanced precision during one outpatient session.
• Intraoperative MRI/CT: Advanced medical imaging that improves surgical outcomes by allowing images to be taken of the brain during surgery. The real-time imagery provides the surgeon with an increased ability to achieve complete tumor and other abnormality removal.
• Endoscopic endonasal approach: This technique allows the surgeon to treat tumors through the nasal cavity, avoiding large incisions and reducing the risk of complications. The GPS-like system used in this surgery locates affected tissue within fractions of a millimeter, so healthy tissue remains intact. AdventHealth was one of the first in the Southeast U.S. to perform this surgery.

Our Orlando institute location is the only hospital in Central Florida that offers these minimally invasive systems and procedures, and you can feel confident that you’re receiving the most advanced neurological care in the area.

How It Works: Robotic Surgery for the Spine

Experience precision spine surgery with advanced robotic technology that’s guided every second by our experienced spine surgeons. You’ll recover faster and have less risk of infection thanks to a much smaller incision and reduced muscle damage. And before, during and after your procedure, you’ll experience compassion that’s anything but robotic, with a personal team of medical experts making sure you have everything you need to feel your best again.

We offer both Mazor Robotics and ExcelsiusGPS for robotic-assisted spine surgery. Mazor Robotics is used at our Orlando institute location for both adults and children, and at our Celebration campus for adults only. And the brand-new Mazor X Stealth, the first in the state of Florida, is located at our Altamonte Springs location. ExcelsiusGPS is offered at our Orlando campus and is currently approved by the FDA for patients aged 18 and older.
