  • Question: What Is Osteoma?

    Answer:

An osteoma is a slow-growing and benign (noncancerous) tumor that attaches to other bones or tissues in the skull.

  • Question: What Are the Symptoms of an Osteoma?

    Answer:

In most cases, people with an osteoma don’t have symptoms. That’s why these tumors aren’t usually discovered until you have an imaging test of the head for some other reason. However, if an osteoma grows large enough to compress certain nerves, symptoms can become apparent, including vision or hearing loss or paralysis of the eyes or face.

  • Question: How Do You Diagnose an Osteoma?

    Answer:

If we suspect you have an osteoma, there are several tests we may recommend, including:

    • Blood count tests
    • Bone scans
    • Computed tomography (CT) scans
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
    • Physical exam (reflexes, muscle strength, coordination)
    • X-rays

These tests can often confirm or rule out an osteoma diagnosis. But if we still aren’t sure what’s causing your pain, we may perform a biopsy, where tissue is removed for testing.
