Your Family's Home for Meningocele Expertise
Meningocele is a rare form of spina bifida that occurs when a baby’s spinal cord does not fully close as it develops. This allows the spinal membrane and part of the spinal cord to grow into the spinal column. The protective membranes around the spinal cord push through the opening in the spinal column. It may leave a fluid-filled sac visible on the back, but the spinal cord remains in the body. Because the spinal cord develops normally, the abnormal growths can be surgically removed with little or no damage to nerve pathways.
Within the AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute network, we specialize in minimally invasive procedures that use advanced technologies to remove abnormal growths in the brain and spine caused by meningocele. With endoscopic approaches, our surgeons can remove growths through the nasal cavity, keeping the surrounding tissue safe and resulting in a faster recovery as no incision is made. Our dedicated teams will be with you and your family every step of the way, ensuring that all your questions are answered and you feel confident.
