  • Question: What symptoms of a brain tumor should never be ignored?

    Answer:

Red flags include new or progressively worsening headaches, unexplained seizures and sudden changes in vision, speech or balance. Other signs include persistent nausea, weakness on one side of the body and unexplained cognitive or personality changes.

  • Question: What is the difference between a benign brain tumor, a malignant brain tumor and a brain metastasis?

    Answer:

A benign brain tumor is noncancerous, slow-growing and has clear borders, meaning it doesn’t invade surrounding tissue. A malignant tumor is cancerous, grows aggressively and spreads into healthy tissue. A brain metastasis is a cancerous tumor that originated somewhere else in the body and traveled to the brain.

  • Question: Will I need a biopsy or surgery to confirm the brain tumor type?

    Answer:

Yes, a biopsy or surgery is usually required to definitively confirm the exact type and grade of a brain tumor. While imaging like an MRI provides vital clues, a pathologist must examine a tissue sample under a microscope for a confirmed diagnosis.

  • Question: How are brain tumors diagnosed?

    Answer:

Brain tumors are typically diagnosed through a combination of neurological exams, advanced imaging tests (like MRI or CT scans) and a biopsy. These steps help doctors locate the tumor, determine its size and identify if it’s cancerous.

  • Question: How do doctors decide between surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or monitoring for a brain tumor?

    Answer:

A multidisciplinary team will collaboratively decide on the treatment plan. The choice between surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or monitoring depends on the tumor’s type, size, location and grade, as well as the patient's age, overall health, genetic biomarkers and personal treatment preferences.

  • Question: What should I expect for recovery, follow-up scans and the risk of recurrence after brain tumor treatment?

    Answer:

Your recovery plan will be tailored to your unique needs. You will generally undergo intensive rehabilitation, followed by routine MRI scans every 2 to 4 months. While recurrence depends on the tumor’s exact type and grade, close surveillance is important because even benign tumors can occasionally regrow.
