  • Question: Can I eat before the procedure, and do I need to stop any medications?

    Answer:

You shouldn’t eat or drink anything for eight hours before your MR-guided focused ultrasound procedure. For medications, follow this guidance:

    • Aspirin and any anti-inflammatory medications (including ibuprofen and naproxen) must be stopped three days before the procedure.
    • Blood-thinning medications like warfarin, Plavix and Xarelto must be stopped three days before the procedure and may be resumed three days afterward.
    • The last dose of your essential tremor medication should be taken 12 hours before the procedure and may be resumed the next morning.

You may continue to take the remainder of your medications without interruption.

  • Question: What happens in the pre-operative area?

    Answer:

In the pre-procedure area, a nurse will take your vital signs and place an IV. Your head will be shaved, and a headframe will be placed on it to keep it from moving. Local numbing medicine will be applied to the areas where the pins will sit. A silicone membrane will be placed on your head to seal the space and allow the cool water to circulate.

  • Question: What should I expect during and after the procedure?

    Answer:

During your MR-guided focused ultrasound, you'll remain awake to achieve optimal treatment results. You’ll be asked to write, draw and perform hand motions during the procedure. Positioning during the operation may cause neck discomfort, but this should be temporary.

You'll receive printed discharge instructions to take with you when you leave, and we'll contact you the next day to schedule your follow-up exam.

  • Question: How long does the procedure last?

    Answer:

The procedure may last three to four hours in the radiology imaging suite. You’ll be awake for the procedure and lying on your back. Afterward, you’ll stay in the radiology area while you recover.

  • Question: Will I have an incision on my head?

    Answer:

No, there will be no incisions. The treatment is done using an ultrasound machine. Your entire head will be shaved, and you may have adhesive bandages applied to the areas where the headframe was attached.

  • Question: How long does the treatment take to become effective?

    Answer:

You should notice improvement with your tremor immediately after the procedure.

  • Question: How long do I have to stay in the hospital, and when is my follow-up appointment?

    Answer:

You’ll be discharged from the hospital once you fully recover from the procedure, which typically takes four to five hours. You’ll receive printed discharge instructions and must have someone drive you home after the procedure. You won’t be able to drive for two weeks.

If you live more than two hours away, we recommend staying locally overnight after your procedure. If you’re staying at a local hotel, please get in touch with them and request a wheelchair for the day of your treatment, as some people experience imbalance shortly after the procedure.

The morning after your procedure, you’ll get a call from a radiology nurse who will schedule your virtual follow-up appointment with your provider for approximately seven to 10 days later.
