The Latest Gamma Knife: Elekta EspritTM

Using precise beams of radiation, the Gamma Knife system targets multiple brain lesions during a single session and leaves the surrounding healthy tissue untouched. With a Gamma Knife procedure, there are no incisions or anesthesia, so patients can go home the same day and often resume normal activities the day after surgery. Tumors and brain lesions once considered inoperable are now highly treatable, often in less than one hour.

And we are now treating patients using the most advanced Gamma Knife: Elekta Esprit. This state-of-the-art technology provides guaranteed precision and the utmost safety. It also enhances your physician’s ability to seamlessly plan and perform your procedure. We are thrilled to serve our patients with the most proven stereotactic radiosurgery technology available — providing highly safe and effective treatment with faster healing and more peace of mind.

How Gamma Knife Benefits Patients

  • Minimal discomfort
  • No anesthesia required
  • No incision

The Gamma Knife system has been used for more than half a million successful surgeries around the world. At the AdventHealth Neuroscience Institute, we’re honored to be the only facility in Central Florida that offers this lifesaving treatment.

  • Question: What should I expect on the day of my Gamma Knife treatment?

    Answer:

On the day of your Gamma Knife procedure, your medical team will fit a lightweight head frame or mask to keep you perfectly still for treatment precision. After undergoing scans to map the target brain lesions, you will lie on a specialized table while the machine silently delivers painless, precise radiation.

  • Question: Will I need anesthesia or a hospital stay for a Gamma Knife procedure?

    Answer:

You will not need general anesthesia or an overnight hospital stay for a Gamma Knife procedure. Despite the name, there is no cutting involved. You’ll typically receive a local anesthetic, light IV sedation or no sedation at all, so you can return home the same day.

  • Question: What are the risks and side effects of Gamma Knife?

    Answer:

Side effects like headaches, mild nausea and scalp irritation at the head frame pin sites are common but typically mild. Long-term risks include localized hair loss, brain swelling, radiation necrosis, and rarely, neurological symptoms and seizures.

  • Question: How soon will the Gamma Knife procedure start working, and when will I know if it’s successful?

    Answer:

Gamma Knife radiosurgery begins altering targeted cells immediately, but visible results occur gradually over weeks to years, depending on the condition being treated. You will know if the procedure is successful by tracking tumor shrinkage or lesion changes using scheduled follow-up imaging ordered by your medical team.

  • Question: What follow-up imaging or treatment might I need after Gamma Knife radiosurgery?

    Answer:

You will typically undergo periodic cranial MRI scans, often every 3 to 6 months, to monitor how the targeted lesion responds. Because radiation can temporarily cause harmless swelling or enlargement, you might require advanced imaging like perfusion MRI or PET scans.

  • Question: Can Gamma Knife be repeated if the tumor grows back or symptoms return?

    Answer:

Yes, Gamma Knife radiosurgery can be repeated if a tumor grows back or symptoms return. Because of its extreme precision, doctors can safely target previously treated areas without severely damaging surrounding healthy tissue. Your doctor will evaluate factors the size of the growth, your prior radiation doses and your overall health to determine if a subsequent procedure is best.
