- How We Diagnose Headaches and Migraines
-
Headaches and migraines can have many different causes, like anxiety, caffeine, too much exercise, sinus inflammation, sinus pressure or even the wrong medicines. When this pain is chronic, it requires special care and understanding, and that's what you can expect from our team. We'll work to pinpoint the cause of your pain and help you find relief.
Because you know your body best, start keeping a headache diary with times, places and other important details about your headaches. This diary can provide valuable data for your medical team as we work to uncover what's causing your headaches or migraines.
We'll also ask about your family health history and identify your triggers. Then, we can build on that foundation with painless computed tomography (CT) scans, X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to uncover any internal injuries. We'll help you break the cycle of pain and prevent future episodes. - Our Headache and Migraine Treatments
-
It's our goal to ease your pain — and your mind — so you can get back to the active life you love. We provide both instant headache treatments to help alleviate pain fast and preventive medications to block repeat occurrences. With migraines, some can last for hours or days, but can often be stopped with anti-inflammatory medicine, pain-relieving nasal sprays and even some inpatient therapies. Our team will work to understand your headache or migraine and come up with the best treatment plan for you.
Stress management is also a big part of preventing headaches and migraines, and our experts are here to help you find what works for you. Your team may include therapists, dietitians, spiritual counselors and other compassionate team members who help improve your health while supporting and encouraging you at every step.
Don't hesitate to visit one of our emergency rooms if you're experiencing a sudden and severe headache, or if it's accompanied by neck pain, a fever, convulsions, confusion or a loss of consciousness. Headaches that occur after a head injury should also be treated immediately as they may be signs of a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Q:Question: What does a migraine aura feel like?
A:Answer:A migraine aura serves as a warning stage before you experience a migraine headache. Aura only affects around 30% of patients who get migraines. There are several different types of migraine auras with unique symptoms:
- Language or Speech Auras: Less common and disrupt your ability to speak or find words
- Sensory Auras: Affect physical sensations, like numbness and tingling in the limbs
- Visual Auras: The most common type that causes temporary vision changes, like flashing lights

Q:Question: What are common migraine triggers, and how can I track mine?
A:Answer:Triggers for migraines vary from person to person. However, common migraine triggers include:
- Aged cheeses and overly processed foods
- Certain medications
- Changes in your sleep
- Dehydration
- Excessive alcohol or caffeine
- Hormonal changes
- Physical exertion
- Skipping meals
- Stress
- Stimuli, like bright or flashing lights
- Weather changes
When it comes to tracking your migraine triggers, consider using a headache diary or a mobile app to help you identify patterns in what may be causing them. Things to track include the timing of your headache, the severity of your symptoms, environmental factors like the weather, medications you recently took and other events before the onset of your headache or migraine. After a few months, you may be able to identify a pattern.

Q:Question: Can taking headache medicine too often make migraines worse?
A:Answer:Yes, taking either prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) headache medications too often can make migraines worse, known as a medication overuse headache (MOH). If you take medication too often, it can become less effective, cause dull pain between headaches and may even cause them to worsen or lead to having migraines more often.
-
Q:Question: When should I see a neurologist for headaches or migraines?
A:Answer:You should schedule a visit with your neurologist if your headache or migraine is disabling, occurs more than four to five times a month, you rely on medications to find everyday relief or is associated with other concerning symptoms, like numbness, vision changes or confusion.
-
Q:Question: What preventive treatments are available for frequent migraines?
A:Answer:There are several medications that you can take that may help prevent the onset of a migraine. The first FDA-approved preventive treatment for migraines is Onabotulinumtoxin A (Botox). Other preventive medications you can take include beta-blockers and antidepressants.
The FDA also approved an anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) treatment that targets the protein known to cause migraines. CGRP is the protein that causes migraines, and when it’s released around the brain, it causes intense inflammation. This preventive treatment is administered by IV monthly or quarterly, as directed by your doctor.
For natural preventive migraine treatment, consider taking vitamins and minerals, like magnesium, riboflavin or coenzyme Q10. You can also try avoiding foods that trigger them, cognitive behavioral therapy and biofeedback.
