  • Question: What should you expect from an interventional pulmonology procedure?

    Answer:

Many interventional pulmonology procedures are minimally invasive and performed without surgical incisions. Depending on the procedure, patients may go home the same day or require only a short hospital stay. Our goal is to provide efficient, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment with less disruption to your daily life.

  • Question: What does an interventional pulmonologist do?

    Answer:

Interventional pulmonologists are expert lung doctors who use diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to diagnose and treat lung cancer, including non-small cell and small cell lung cancer and other lung, airway and pleural diseases. Using minimally invasive procedures, such as bronchoscopy, these physicians can get a clearer view of your lungs and airways, delivering safer, more personalized care with less pain and a quicker recovery.

  • Question: Why would you need a bronchoscopy?

    Answer:

A bronchoscopy is a noninvasive diagnostic solution used by your interventional pulmonologist to diagnose issues in your lungs or other airway conditions. Bronchoscopies can be used to determine the root cause of a persistent cough, coughing up blood or difficulty breathing, among other issues.

  • Question: What happens during a bronchoscopy?

    Answer:

Once you’re put under sedation and local anesthesia, your doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube with a camera into your throat to view your lungs and airways for diagnosis or treatment. They will also collect a small tissue sample (biopsy) for further examination. This procedure typically takes 30 to 90 minutes.

  • Question: What are the risks of bronchoscopy?

    Answer:

Bronchoscopies are very safe and low-risk outpatient procedures. Potential risks could include minor bleeding, an infection, a sore throat or fever. Talk to your doctor to determine if a bronchoscopy is your best next step.

  • Question: How long does it take to get bronchoscopy biopsy results?

    Answer:

It generally takes one to seven days to receive your preliminary bronchoscopy results. However, because of the specialized testing involved, it can take between seven and 10 days to get your biopsy results.

  • Question: What is EBUS?

    Answer:

Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) is a specialized form of bronchoscopy that uses ultrasound imaging. While a traditional bronchoscopy only allows your physician to see the inside of your airways, EBUS enables them to see through your airway walls for greater diagnostic accuracy. An EBUS procedure is typically used for cancer staging.
