Understanding Neurointerventional
Neurointerventional radiology is a neurology specialty that combines imaging and minimally invasive techniques to treat neurological conditions like stroke, brain aneurysms and brain tumors. It can include capturing images of your brain and, in some cases, repairing or opening arteries to improve blood flow.
- Advanced Imaging

Our team uses advanced biplane neuroangiography technology, which gives your physician a 3D, high-definition view of the brain or spine. Clear imaging helps improve accuracy during procedures and allows the physician to monitor the patient’s progress closely.
The biplane suite system has two rotating cameras that create 3D images of the brain’s blood vessels. These cameras can also take images from multiple sides of the brain at the same time, reducing your procedure time.
- Minimally Invasive Technology

If repairing or opening arteries is necessary, your neurointerventional radiologist can make small incisions in your groin to access a blood vessel. They then thread special tools through it to see a particular area of your brain or spine.
With smaller incisions and less-invasive treatment, patients typically experience shorter hospital stays, a faster recovery and fewer complications than open surgery. - Tigertriever

AdventHealth is now using a new device called Tigertriever which enables it's neurointerventional radiologists to remove clots blocking blood flow to the brain that can cause ischemic strokes. It can manually adjust to match the size of the specific patient blood vessel, unlike conventional stent retrievers.
A New Standard of Care for Stroke Treatment
Our neurointerventional radiologists are highly skilled in mechanical thrombectomy, a minimally invasive procedure to treat ischemic stroke. This treatment has been proven to reduce disability in patients up to 24 hours after the first signs of a stroke.
During a mechanical thrombectomy, we make a small incision in your leg or arm to insert a long, thin tube (catheter) into a blood vessel so we can access your blood clot. Then, your surgeon will use a special clot-retrieving device to remove the clot.
Using mechanical thrombectomy, AdventHealth Tampa was one of the first hospitals in Florida to create a procedure that allows for stroke treatment up to 24 hours after the first signs of a stroke appear. Through AdventHealth’s care network and the AdventHealth Brain and Spine Institute, you’ll also have access to this new standard of care if you or a loved one ever need it.
